About this book

The Project Gutenberg RST Manual is a technical handbook that explains how to use reStructuredText (RST) markup within the Project Gutenberg production workflow. From the very first pages the book launches into a systematic catalogue of classes and directives, beginning with inline‑text styles such as italics, bold, small‑caps, and color specifications, then moving on to block‑level formatting, front‑matter markup, pagination controls, and table construction. Each feature is introduced with a concise table that lists the class name, its effect, and sample syntax, followed by short examples that illustrate the resulting output. The opening material therefore reads like a reference guide, laying out the building blocks a publisher needs to format e‑books, generate tables of contents, footnotes, drop caps, and other typographic elements.

The tone is instructional and matter‑of‑fact, written in a straightforward, third‑person style typical of early‑2000s technical documentation. It assumes familiarity with markup concepts but does not require deep programming expertise. Readers who work on digital publishing, need to customize e‑book layouts, or are interested in the mechanics of RST will find the manual useful; it is less suited to casual readers looking for narrative or literary content.

Classes For Block Text ----------------------

These classes have an effect on block text. Please do not confuse the alignment of the block with the alignment of the text in the block. Eg. a table can be centered, while the text inside the table is left-aligned. The alignment of the block is set with the :option:`align` option.

.. table:: Classes For Block Text :width: 75% :widths: 1 3 :class: norules

=========================== ================================================= Class Explanation =========================== ================================================= :css:`left` Left-aligns the text in the block. :css:`center` Centers the text in the block. :css:`right` Right-aligns the text in the block. :css:`justify` Justifies the text in the block. :css:`white-space-pre-line` Preserves newlines. =========================== =================================================

Classes For Front Matter Markup -------------------------------

EpubMaker includes a few classes to markup front matter. While it is not necessary to do this, it adds value. In future the PG catalog might automatically extract not only the cover page but also the title page, verso, etc.

.. table:: Classes For Front Matter Markup :width: 75% :widths: 1 3 :class: norules

==================== ======================================================== Class Explanation ==================== ======================================================== :css:`coverpage` The cover page. :css:`frontispiece` The frontispiece. :css:`titlepage` The title page. :css:`verso` The title page verso. :css:`dedication` The dedication page. :css:`plainpage` A general class for page. ==================== ========================================================

Use these classes on a :directive:`container`. These classes already insert page breaks before the container so you need not insert page breaks on your own.
