About this book

Monte‑Cristo’s Daughter is a sequel that continues the adventure of Edmond Dantès after the events of Dumas’s famous novel. The story opens in Rome, where the Count has taken up residence in the marble‑clad Palazzo Costi while arranging his daughter Zuleika’s education at a convent. From the very first chapter the narrative introduces a cast of familiar and new characters, Zuleika, the beautiful daughter of the Count and Haydée; the impetuous Roman Viscount Giovanni Massetti; and a mysterious prima donna, Louise d’Armilly, whose cryptic refusal of the Count’s invitation sets off a chain of intrigue. The opening scene places the Count in a study, puzzling over a newspaper notice about the singer, and immediately launches into a web of suspicion, love affairs, and the promise of “thrilling” adventures that will drive the plot forward.

The novel is written in the melodramatic, richly descriptive prose typical of late‑19th‑century French romance, though rendered in English for an American readership. Its style combines elaborate character sketches with rapid, plot‑driven dialogue, echoing the theatricality of Dumas while adding the author’s own flair for suspense and romance. Readers who enjoy domestic fiction that intertwines familial duty, passionate love affairs, and the exotic settings of Italy and France, especially fans of the original Count of Monte‑Cristo saga, will find this continuation engaging. The book’s emphasis on intricate plotting, vivid scenery, and heightened emotions makes it a satisfying choice for those who appreciate historical romance with a strong sense of adventure.

"MONTE-CRISTO'S DAUGHTER," a wonderfully brilliant, original, exciting and absorbing novel, is the Sequel to "The Count of Monte-Cristo," Alexander Dumas' masterwork, and the continuation and conclusion of that great romance, "Edmond Dantes." It possesses rare power, unflagging interest and an intricate plot that for constructive skill and efficient development stands unrivalled. Zuleika, the beautiful daughter of Monte-Cristo and Haydee, is the heroine, and her suitor, the Viscount Giovanni Massetti, an ardent, impetuous young Roman, the hero. The latter, through a flirtation with a pretty flower-girl, Annunziata Solara, becomes involved in a maze of suspicion that points to him as an abductor and an assassin, causes his separation from Zuleika and converts him into a maniac. The straightening out of these tangled complications constitutes the main theme of the thrilling book. The novel abounds in ardent love scenes and stirring adventures. The Count of Monte-Cristo figures largely in it, and numerous Monte-Cristo characters are introduced. "MONTE-CRISTO'S DAUGHTER" is the latest addition to Petersons' famous series, consisting of "The Count of Monte-Cristo," "Edmond Dantes," "The Countess of Monte-Cristo," "The Wife of Monte-Cristo," and "The Son of Monte-Cristo."
