Norman Ten Hundred: A Record of the 1st (Service) Bn. Royal Guernsey Light Infantry

About this book

Norman Ten Hundred is a regimental history of the 1st (Service) Battalion, Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, written by Arthur Stanley Blicq. The book opens with a sweeping pre‑war sketch of Guernsey’s ancient ties to Normandy before plunging into the gritty day‑to‑day of the battalion in 1917‑1918. Blicq’s narrative begins on a cramped cattle‑truck ride to the Belgian front, where the men endure suffocating heat, a near‑miss by a German bomb, and the relentless mud and rain of the Western Front. Detailed entries follow the unit through the Cambrai offensive, the Passchendaele sector and a series of grueling marches, bivouacs, and skirmishes, giving a vivid picture of the hardships and camaraderie of these island soldiers.

The voice is that of a contemporary participant, mixing colloquial soldier slang with a formal, almost lyrical description of the battlefield. Blicq’s style is dense and descriptive, reflecting the wartime diary tradition of the early twentieth century. Readers who relish authentic frontline accounts, military historians focused on the Channel Islands’ contribution, or anyone interested in the human texture of World War I’s lesser‑known regiments will find this work compelling.

Guernsey--named Sarnia by the Romans--one of the Channel Isles from out the sun swathed romance of whose shores rallied a fierce band of Norman warriors to the aid of their Duke, William of Normandy; afterwards the Conqueror, at Hastings, 1066. In reward for their valour William granted the Isles the independence they maintain to this day. From Guernsey something approaching 7,000 men have gone out into the Great Undertaking. The Norman Ten Hundred is the 1st Royal Guernsey Light Infantry offered by the States of Guernsey for active participation side by side with the Mother Country's troops in any of the fighting areas. The narrative is authentic.
