At communications headquarters, operators and supervisors struggle to explain the silence, while the malfunction, or mystery, draws increasingly serious attention. The book’s intellectual framework appears in seven questions that challenge accepted explanations, asking what might happen when causes and effects, majorities and minorities, or established scientific laws are reconsidered.
The prose combines brisk technical detail with wry workplace satire. Supervisors fret over procedure, status, and blame, while the dialogue is edged with irritation, cynicism, and understated humor. Its imagined future is shaped by space colonization, instantaneous communication, astrocalculators, and a powerful class of unconventional scientific thinkers called Extrapolators, giving the novel a distinctly mid-century science-fiction atmosphere.
