--If "oe" (only in English words) displays as a single character, and apostrophes and quotation marks are "curly" or angled, you have the UTF-8 version (best). If any part of this paragraph displays as garbage, try changing your text reader's "character set" or "file encoding". If that doesn't work, proceed to: --In the Latin-1 version, "oe" is two letters, but Norwegian words like "öl" have accents and "æ" is a single letter. Apostrophes and quotation marks will be straight ("typewriter" form).

A handful of words were printed with unusual diacritics (macron, breve). These are individually explained at the end of the e-text.

To reduce visual clutter, italic markings have been omitted from currency notations such as "1s. 2d." Illustration captions have been supplied from the List of Illustrations; they were not used in the printed book except for the full-page plates. The title-page illustration is "The Colony at Breakfast in Memurudalen", repeated later in the book.

Unless otherwise noted, all Norwegian names and words--including those that are obviously wrong--were printed as shown. For details, see the end of the e-text after the list of typographical errors.]
