In Memory of

Chris Curnow (1937-2023) the Project Manager at Distributed Proofreaders who selected this book, and more than 2200 others, to be preserved as free digital transcriptions by Project Gutenberg.

The book uses two symbols for which no unicode exists; ◍ was substituted for a small circle overlapping slash marks, inside a box; ▦ was substituted for horizontal lines with a black dot, inside a box; horizontal braces above or below columns are indicated like this: /~~~~~\ \~~~~~/.

The discussion of twills uses notation like this:

3 3 --- and ---. These were reformatted as [3/1] and [1\3]. 1 1

Words and phrases in italics are surrounded by underscores, like this. Final stops missing at the end of sentences and abbreviations were added. Footnotes were renumbered sequentially and were moved to the end of the chapter. There are multiple anchors to footnotes [9], [13] and [14]. Ditto marks were replaced with text in some tables to accommodate column alignment.
