Meet Abel Magwitch
Abel Magwitch is a desperate escaped convict hiding on the marshes, still wearing a leg iron when the young Pip encounters him. Frightening and hungry, he relies on the child's secret help and does not forget Pip's kindness.

A fearful man all in coarse grey, with a great iron on his leg, no hat, broken shoes and an old rag tied round his head; soaked in water, smeared with mud, lamed and shivering, teeth chattering. In later years a weathered, grey-haired man in rough traveller's clothes.
