Inside the story
Pip, whose name is Philip Pirrip, is an orphan boy growing up on the Kent marshes under the strict care of his older sister. He is apprenticed to Joe Gargery, the village blacksmith, and begins life as a poor working boy with few prospects beyond the forge.
A small, wide-eyed orphan boy in coarse country clothes at the start ('the small bundle of shivers'), who grows into a slender, well-dressed young gentleman once his expectations arrive.
