Jack London’s The Call of the Wild is an adventure and nature story centered on Buck, a powerful sled-dog-sized animal who lives as a favored companion on a prosperous estate in California’s Santa Clara Valley. In 1897, the Klondike gold rush is drawing people toward the frozen Northland and creating a demand for strong, warm-coated dogs. Buck’s sheltered life is violently disrupted by pet theft, carrying him from comfort into confinement, harsh treatment, and an unfamiliar world shaped by human greed and Arctic hardship. The book places domestic security against the pull of wilderness, exploring a dog’s strength, pride, endurance, and changing response to danger.
London writes in a vivid, forceful late-nineteenth-century style, combining richly detailed landscapes with brisk action and close attention to Buck’s sensations and instincts. The prose can be lyrical when describing sunlit California or the northern cold, then stark and brutal in scenes of violence and survival.
