Inside the story
Meet Jim
Jim is Miss Watson’s enslaved man, who runs away after learning he may be sold South. He meets Huck on the river and becomes his companion and protector on the raft, bringing loyalty, warmth, deep superstition, and a sharp, caring mind.
On the page
A middle-aged, powerfully built Black man, tall enough to stand upright in the island cavern, with a broad, kind, expressive face and close-cropped hair. He wears rough, worn work clothes and a battered straw hat, the plain garb of an enslaved field and house hand.
