Meet Father Mapple
At the story’s outset, Father Mapple is the respected chaplain of the New Bedford Whaleman’s Chapel, where sailors gather before going to sea. A former harpooneer, he preaches a powerful sermon on Jonah to the congregation, including Ishmael.
