Tashtego is a Gay Head Indian harpooneer aboard the Pequod, where he serves as boat-steerer for the second mate, Stubb. Descended from a line of proud warrior hunters, he brings the skills and traditions of his people to the whaling ship's dangerous work.
A lithe, snaky-limbed man with tawny copper skin, long lean sable-black hair, high cheekbones, and large glittering black eyes; carries a keen harpoon like the arrow of his hunter forefathers.
