About Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is a dramatic tale of Verona divided by an ancient feud between the Montagues and Capulets. The play steps quickly into public violence, where servants trade insults, swords are drawn, and the Prince threatens severe punishment for further disorder. Against this atmosphere of inherited hostility stand the young Romeo and Juliet, whose lives are shaped by family authority, youthful feeling, and the pressures of an older generation. Romeo appears as an inward, lovesick figure, secluded from daylight and consumed by an unreturned affection, while Juliet is discussed by her father as a child approaching marriageable age. The world is one where private emotions readily become public conflict.

Written for the stage in the late sixteenth century, the play combines formal verse, sharp wordplay, comic exchanges, and intensely lyrical expressions of grief and desire. Its language can be ornate and metaphorical, but lively banter and physical action keep the scenes immediate.
